Early Summer in Bridgebayre gave the lines into the city a new form of Hell. The heat wilted crops and melted wax. Perhaps it was the thought of the worse heat in August to come that made people faint, or maybe it was simply the wait. People of all shapes and sizes waited in the lines, Aerites, Elves, Half Elves, of course humans and even some Fey loitered on the stone pathway waiting for the guards to clear them to enter the city. Many had wheeled stalls or wagons with them. One particular peasant carried only the hat on her head and the clothes on her back.

The grass and all the flowers around were wilting. Early summer in Bridgebayre; obviously someone up above had a sick sense of humour. These guards at the city borders were either being slow to spite the people waiting outside, or they were truly outnumbered in the guard-to-people ratio.
Mathieu wanted to be optimistic. He was sure that the people checking the beings coming through into the city were doing their best to move everyone along. He had been leading his stallion along by the reins, the both of them feeling the effect of the heat after only minutes inching along in the line. Maybe if they moved behind that Aerite's wings... no, the wings were too small.
Mathieu took a tiny drink from the few canteens of water he had left. All he had to do was get into the city and he could refill his supplies. Once that was done, he'd get to follow his lead on the whereabouts of a particular demon he'd gotten out a village, only to have to flee somewhere else.

The sun beat down upon hard on the long line of travellers, merchants, and other assortments of peoples in the line. Brown grass as far as the eye could see.
Denzel's eyes glistened from the sun and he averted his gaze back below his hood and drew it deeper overhead with a gloved hand, to hide his albino skin from the rest of the world. Unlike the rest of the line, however, he was not thirsty in the least, he had fed long before he'd entered the line, so he would be fine for at least a couple days. He knew that once he reached the town, he'd be able to rent a room at either the inn or tavern, thus hiding himself from suspicion, he had NO intention to draw any attention to himself. The last thing he needed was either a lynching mob, a panic, or a hunter to come after him. Going ghoul in the city was not his favourite way to spend a night.

Mathieu was first and foremost a man of his word. He had said he would banish the demon from this world, and he intended to, no matter the long, hot, grueling challenges that stood between him and that goal.
A bigger problem was how to kill it. Demons were such trouble as they shifted shape so often. The one form Mathieu's had seen was fast... maybe if he could get his horse close enough somehow-
As though by some sort of telepathy, Mathieu's horse began to grow anxious. He pawed the ground and nickered quietly, growing irritated."Easy, boy. What's got you worked up, huh?" He tried to soothe the jumpy animal, to have it turn its head in the direction of someone as though answering the question. Whoever it was had a thick layer of clothing on for such a day. In fact, not an inch of skin could be seen at all. It was suspicious to any normal being, and even Mathieu was able of the negative feeling when it came to someone who seemed markedly, well, unlawful.

She could feel the tension of the horseman, and hoped it wasn't her aura the horse was picking up on. Stupid animals being perceptive... but no; the wind shifted and brought the scent of a blood-drinker past the horse and to her nose. She sighed internally. That could only mean trouble.
What would a Vampire be doing in a city but gorging? Maybe she'd hunt it down herself.... just to save the guards and herself some trouble. She certainly didn't need the security heightened. The Library was always the first thing they tightened up on... always the freaking Library.
Lost in thought, she strayed too close to the skittish horse; her aura made it jump and in doing so knocked her hat off and almost sent her sprawling on the cobblestone. Inhumanly fast, she saved herself from falling. She wasn't fast enough to save her hat from the wind.
Well, shit.

"Fusoya!" Mathieu scolded the horse quickly,"Calm down!" He gave the reins a tug and held the horse still until it had stopped its fidgetting. That taken care of, the paladin dropped what he was holding at moved around to see what had happened. Somehow, whoever had been knocked out hadn't fallen flat to the stones beneath.
"Miss, I'm terribly sorry," Mathieu offered an apologetic smile,"I don't know what's gotten into my stallion, but he's been jumpy lately what with all the evils floating around these days. "I am Mathieu, a paladin. Is there something I could do to make it up to you?"

Shitshitshitshit... if she shook his hand, he would probably recognize her energies... if she didn't it would seem odd. And her eyes...
"Oh, no." She said, looking at her feet." Um... it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention and got to close... you can't blame a horse for being bad tempered in this crowd."
She smiled politely despite the Paladin's inability to see it.
"I've gotten separated from my companions as well. I best go find them."
Still looking down she hurried up the line in the direction of the wind.

The poor thing. She sounded so nervous. She'd probably been unnerved by almost getting kicked by the powerful back legs of a horse; it wouldn't be the first time Mathieu had seen the result of such a blow.
"Honestly, miss, you needn't be in such a hurry. I assure you the line won't be going too fast any time soon," Mathieu took a few long steps forward to try and catch her before she could get too far. He reached for her shoulder.

She spun as his hand connected with her shoulder. Out of reflex, her violet eyes connected with the Paladin's vivid green ones, before she continued her movement and broke free from his grasp. Her feet planted firmly on the stone she faced him.
"Don't touch me." she hissed.
A few people backed away from the two of them with a mummer.
Rae had never liked Charades anyway.

At the very second direct contact was established, Mathieu knew what mistake he had made. It was probably the dumbest one at such a moment like this.
He'd left his sword in the horse's saddle.
He was quick to drop his hand from her. Her aura had been unmistakable, but different from the others somehow. Regardless, a demon. Mathieu's hand fell toward his hip. With any luck, he could be able to work up a quick holy seal to keep her away if she attacked."Had I been more aware, I'd have slain you on the spot," the paladin said softly, a tiny crook of a smile on the corner of his mouth,"But you chose to deceive me, and nearly get away with it. If your intentions for getting into the city were pure, I may just let you get a small head start. What say you to that?"

"Paladins," she spat,"are the most narrow minded, bigoted people I have ever met. I can't help what I am."
With that she made a dash for the edge of the bridge, and sailed off the side, into the water. With a splash she disappeared from view, under the murky surface of the Bayre river. No bubbles rose up to tattle her position.
The crowd then rushed to the edge to try and spot the curiosity; the guards quickly following. Shouting. Confusion. People and guards mulled about ineffectively looking for the jumper.
Under the water she swam into the cooler shade of the bridge. With a silent breath of air, she surfaced out of view of the mass of people above her.
Damned if she ever did anything legal again. Look where it always got her. Suppressing the urge to mumble, she swam silently down the center of the bridge to the island.

Mathieu saw that she was about to run and started after her, only to have to stop short before going over the edge of the bridge himself. He stared down into the muddy water below, but not a single wave or bubble offered to help him find her. He wasn't sure if he should consider himself lucky. He wasn't exactly prepared for battle, but still, he if ever saw that girl again, he promised himself he wouldn't let her slip through his fingers again.
Mathieu trailed back to his horse, first thing taking the sword, tucked in its sheath, and putting it at his side for future use. Fusoya still hadn't entirely calmed down. After all, the heavily-clothed man was still there, and hadn't seemed disturbed by the crowds of people swarming to the bridgeside.

Denzel watched the crowd and the paladin rush over to the edge of the bridge to watch the demon rush over."hmmmmm, a demon trying to get into Bridgebayre", he muttered to himself,"In broad daylight....Well, I guess I can't say im not surprised, she isn't the only strange thing out here". He gave a chuckle to himself beneath his breath.
He took a glance and shot a bone chilling deathly glare at the frightened horse."Chill out" he said, barely audible. He took the split second moment afterwords to make his way towards the front of the line, while the rest of the people were distracted by the diving demon.
